With the primary piece of the collection, the LC01 chair takes its forms from my biggest inspiration; Mid-Century design. The LC01, and the collection revolve around my inspiration in design. While specific or singular movements, designers, and techniques are typical sources of influences - I am more inspired by pieces of design. With the LC01, the inspiration lies from 50’s home and family furniture. Ray and Charles Eames being the pinnacle of design in the turn of the mid-century, the use of simple materials made for effective outcomes. While using steel may be of old methods - like bauhausian ones, this piece relies on the effectiveness of simple design to make the materials fit together. “Flashy” is not its first name, but comfort, effective production, and timelessness is. Entirely built by hand, the formed steel is something I had always wanted to work with. The material redefines its rigid nature when put through the hydraulic bending machine. While we may see tubular steel as a rod, it can be manipulated to look like something smooth and supple; almost anything but metal. The Cymbal Sconce was designed out of working as a fabricator for New York’s best furniture and interior designers. After about a year, the idea came to me through this continuous work with brass and the uproar of sconces to the scene. I had been making tables, lamps, and various other decorative touches to pieces in brass and decided I wanted to explore the material myself. The patina process is quite unpredictable and impractical in a way, but its visual beauty is unlike anything else. Brass is a material that is notoriously difficult to stabilize (any skin oils will tarnish and chemically change the material forever). Using patina to speed up this process is extremely rewarding and beautiful. While it is not unfamiliar, plug-in sconces are less common than hard-wired. The lamp is available in both options. Frank Lloyd-Wright used nature WITH his design. I look to nature FOR my design. As its name sugests, the waterfall table takes its lines and form from the cascades. Its use of metal and wood in harmony reminds us of cold and warm feels. The feels that one might get from the backsplash of the waterfall in its environment often surrounded by woods or softer matter. Entirely built by hand, the welded steel and joined maple gives the table a luxurious feel. The function was designed for the problem that coffee table books get in your way. Although pleasant, and of interest; a table gets swallowed in books - at least mine did. The extra level being visible by glass allows the user to enjoy both the function of the table at its origin, while still having the ability to see, reach, and take advantage of the literature. Formed from the inspiration of sculpture and Bauhaus design styles, the crane lamp is as much engineering as it is design. The Crane lamp, name after the physics of a crane, is made with the idea of counterbalance at its core. With the principles of Antonio Gaudi in building, the lamp was made using two bags connected with strings to measure and weigh the counterweight. The lamp was engineered in many ways - the base spins on a lathed bar fitted to the inside diameter of the tube and then bolted to the base of the lamp, the arm seesaws on a pin mechanism relying on the conterbalanced weight, and the shade is fitted to hold the weight using just gravity. The lamp is the final piece to the made for spaces collection, surrounding my personal inspiration sources, and experiencing materiality through sculptural means to achieve a fully functional object. Design relies on function, and these objects are infinetly functional with form at the back end of their creation - yet at the forefront of their making. Because the design relies on its function, its creation was cared for and meticulously carried out for its form. Naval Ships and EMECO, thank you for pointing me towards design. The Naval Side Table is entirely based on indestructible EMECO designs. While Emeco makes their products in aluminium and have 70 step treatments unavailable to me for finishing, the process of hand made, solid, and “made for destruction” was the inspiration behind this. As a kid I loved boats and ships, and I ended up living by the ocean for many years spending countless hours on boats. I then discovered naval ships and the interiors of these ships - solid metal everywhere, lightweight furniture, floating devices everywhere; what an unbelievable environment.&nbsp; I wanted to make an ode to these spaces - and to Emeco. They showed me that design is not always luxury and beauty. Design is pure engineering sometimes. Pure function, and pure sustainability. The naval side table is made for that and that only. Its shape is meerly for structural integrity, and its materials are chosen only for its life-cycle. Wether it be Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, or what tells us which elements are in our galaxies, PRISM’s are fundamental, and recognizable. The PRISM lamp was inspired by nature. Science and humans know every element ever existing in our galaxy or the next, because of the prism. The basis of light, the paradox of physics. The lamp was constructed using scandinavian joinery with the shape of the prism staying true both for the base and the shade. The contrast of the metal and wood is a way to express how a prism changes the nature of light; in this case lighting up the steel with warm light to blend into the wood base. The design has a switch system designed with magnets. Waxed Unbleached Cotton, Handmade Plant Dyes, Recycled Velcro, Reused Leather. 2020 Designed for the houseless, sold to help them. The Wooftop leashes and their bag were designed to provide a hand for the houseless and their companions. We often see the houseless community with furry friends - ultimately what led us to sell a product for both the benefit to help those in need, while designing in the mind of those out on the streets. These were co-created with members of the community, aiding and guiding us to make a product for them. Two colors were released, in 10 examples respectively. Biomaterials is a startup focused on removing or replacing single-use plastics in packagings with a composite material made from beer dregs and coffee.&nbsp; The startup is led by young founders Nicolas Jourdan-Gassin and Alexandre Savard. The couple came to me with an established product and a strong idea of a logo in the form of a megaphone called ENCORE!, signifying the second life of objects, their encore… &nbsp;The team was inspired by manifestations and political chants, theatrical /musical influences, and thus came about the megaphone idea. The biomaterial is created through sourcing of beer dregs from local breweries, repurposing it into the composite, and then reselling it back to the breweries to use as coasters; drinking a beer on a beer.
